6 FAQs of PRP Facial Therapy

Discover the basics of PRP treatments and their facial rejuvenation applications.

PRP (or platelet rich plasma) treatments have been used successfully for years in sports medicine, and now they are now emerging as a top choice for improving the health and appearance of skin as well. Also known as blood facials, these procedures are growing in popularity because of their organic nature and effectiveness.

If you or someone you love is in search of a natural and low-side effect solution for wrinkles, aging, or other skin damage issues, PRP facial treatments from Dr. Stuart Kauffman can help!

What is PRP?

PRP – or platelet-rich plasma – is a natural product created from your own body. Your blood contains 93% red blood cells, 6% white blood cells, 1% platelets, and plasma. PRP extracts a base of your own plasma and concentrates it with about 5-10% more platelets than usual.

This process of creating PRP is minimally invasive, taking only about 25-30 minutes and routinely accomplished in the course of an office visit. The goal of PRP facial treatments is to act as a matrix that promotes collagen growth, regenerates tissue, and naturally smooths and tightens the skin. As a result, PRP softens wrinkles and creates smoother skin texture and tone.

What Are the Advantages of PRP Facial Therapy?

How Does PRP Facial Therapy Differ from Other Injections or Fillers?

PRP stimulates your own collagen to grow for total facial rejuvenation rather than individual area improvement. In contrast, hyaluronic acid fillers (Restylane and Juvederm, among others) work by means of solid material that fill lines and skin folds in the face. These fillers are indicated to soften deeper lines such as the folds around the mouth area or to plump lips. They usually last from 6-18 months; repeated treatments are required to fill the area again.

PRP facial therapy is more effective for volumizing faces, plumping out cheek indentations, softening eye hollows, improve the overall tone, tightness, and texture of the skin, and filling in areas where hyaluronic acid fillers cannot reach or are not safe to use.

What Are the Side Effects?

Side effects from PRP facial treatments are very mild because it is unlikely that the body will have an adverse reaction to its own materials. At most, you may expect to experience mild to moderate swelling and/or redness or heat in the area of treatment, which are common side effects in the activation of your platelets.

In addition, because a volume of fluid is administered to the area, some bruising can occur and may take several days to disappear.

How Soon Will I See Results?

Standard PRP facial procedures require three treatments at 4-6 week intervals. Collagen production can take up to three months to occur and the results can differ depending on the individual, but the first noticeable result is usually the improvement in skin turgor and elasticity.

It is important to note that factors such as smoking, stress, and illness can affect the speed and duration of results.

Am I a Good Fit for PRP Facial Therapy?

As with the majority of cosmetic procedures, the best female candidates are ladies who are not pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive. In addition, this treatment is not recommended for people undergoing anticoagulation treatments, suffering from autoimmune conditions, or who have contracted any type of cancer.

The presence of certain implants in the treatment area may also affect your candidacy.

PRP facial treatments offer patients long lasting, effective skin rejuvenation through the body’s own platelets and natural processes.
